These chopsticks are made of Sugi (Japanese cedar) and finished with a hand plane (kanna).
At first glance, they may appear modest, but a closer look reveals the striking beauty of the octagonal shape—crafted entirely with a hand plane and without the use of sandpaper. Because the surface is cut cleanly with a sharp hand plane, it rarely becomes rough with use. For improved usability, the planing line is not perfectly straight—it subtly shifts angle partway down the shaft. The chopsticks are made from exceptionally fine-grained heartwood of Sugi, and even the end grain at both tips is captivating. These are the shop owner’s personal favorite.
Sugi’s characteristic lightness, flexibility, and softness can also be felt in the gentle touch when the chopstick tips come into contact with a dish.
They have been lightly coated with olive oil for storage, but since no strong protective finish is applied, they are essentially uncoated. They are not resistant to discoloration caused by chemical reactions. We recommend washing them promptly after use and storing them in a well-ventilated place to dry. No special maintenance is generally required.
