A remarkable piece by Shimizu of Japonica—this guinomi (small sake cup) is made from Sugi (Japanese Cedar) and dyed using various plant-based methods.

The outer surface is hatsuri-carved, meaning the wood has been split rather than shaved or planed. In contrast to the uzukuri technique, here the harder winter grain is recessed while the softer summer grain is brought forward, creating a raised, textured pattern.

The resulting uneven vertical grain gives the cup a sense of strength and rustic charm in appearance, and a comforting feel when held.

Since the summer grain is soft, it can dent easily—but thanks to its rough-hewn appearance, such marks aren’t distracting. Instead, they can be enjoyed as part of its character as it ages with use.

The mordants used are: tin for logwood; iron for suo(sappanwood), rosemary, and sumac gall; alum for kariyasu (a kind of Japanese silver glass) and shiko (lac); and no mordant for ai(indigo).

Please note that both the shape created by the hatsuri carving and the color tones of the dye vary between pieces. The color also changes significantly depending on how light strikes the surface.

This surprisingly light sake cup may make you drink too much sake, so be careful.
