This is a cake plate made from plant-dyed Sugi (Japanese Cedar).
The way the grain appears to shift around the raised rim is striking, making each piece a joy to use on its own. Collecting several colors brings a vibrant energy to the table.
The underside was close to the bark, so some roughness remains even after finishing (see photo for examples).
The mordants used are: alum for shiko (lac), copper for kariyasu (a kind of Japanese silver glass), iron for logwood, and no mordant for ai (indigo).
Please note that each plate will have individual differences in dye appearance due to the grain pattern, and the perceived color will also vary depending on the lighting.
