In the fall of 2024, the shop owner, completely taken with Coasters (Ultra-Thin, Plant-Dyed), began thinking of ways to share them with more people.
In traditional Japanese manners, it is considered proper to serve tea on a saucer when hosting guests. Around the same time, the shop owner happened to be making thick 20mm coasters and thought: What if placing the coaster on top of a base could bring out even more of that refined, Japanese atmosphere—and also expand its potential uses? With that in mind, a prototype was created.
The shop owner brought the prototype to Shimizu-san, who liked the idea and enthusiastically agreed to make it a reality. Shaping a precise square recess inside the saucer takes both skill and effort, but this master of Sugi woodworking executed it beautifully—even using hardwood.
